NORTHERN NAMIBIA

BACK TO DESTINATIONS

Namibia covers a large area with three distinct sections: the Coast, the northe1.jpg (6562 bytes)
southern Interior, and the North. Namibia’s charm stems from its remoteness
and vast stark desert landscapes. The country has a decidedly German character. English is the main language of commerce (and air traffic control) but German is widely spoken. Namibia is not regarded as a major game viewing area although a variety of antelope and other animals can be found throughout the country. Animals in appreciable numbers will only be found in the far northern Etosha National Park and Caprivi Strip areas. Throughout the country distances between destinations are large and a small aircraft provides one of the most convenient methods of getting around. Fuel stops must be carefully planned.

Namibia’s capital city, Windhoek, sits inland on a high plateau almost at the geographic center of the country. The terrain in all directions is sparsely populated and rugged.

Moving north, inland from the Skeleton Coast, is Damaraland, a rocky region that blooms during rainy seasons with a carpet of green feathery grasses. Damaraland features a Petrified Forest, Burnt Mountain - resplendent in its rainbow of colors including red, orange, purple, white, and gray, and the Brandberg - Namibia’s highest mountain, famous for its many rock paintings.

Further north lies one of Africa’s great game sanctuaries, Etosha National Park. The centerpiece of the park is the Etosha Pan, a mineral-rich "salt desert" of hard deeply cracked clay. The Pan is almost completely devoid of vegetation, but when it floods it becomes a major attraction for thousands of migratory birds. The Park is home to 340 species of birds and haven for the endangered black rhino as well as elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, kudu, and predators.
